Meet the Member: Joslyn Fecik
by Jennifer Velasquez
We are excited to share our interview with Joslyn Fecik, owner of the jewelry company Shop Ubuntu. Ubuntu is a Zulu word and philosophy that is translated to “I am because we are” or “human kindness.” It is the belief that we are all connected by our humanity and we should love each other as such. What an important message! Find out how Joslyn makes an impact through her business below.
NYHC: Tell us about what you make
Joslyn Fecik: I hand make jewelry right at home in Brooklyn using semi precious stones and charms!
NYHC: What is unique or different about your process and/or designs?
JF: I make everything in small batches and make everything right at my coffee table! Each piece sold helps me sponsor 5 children in Haiti.
NYHC: Do you have any favorite pieces? What makes them special to you?
JF: I'm having so much fun making shell pieces right now! I wanted to be a mermaid soooo bad when I was little so I love making shell jewelry because it reminds me of all my memories of pretending I was a mermaid as a little girl.
NYHC: What is your favorite tool or supply?
JF: Painted shells and pearls!
NYHC: Is there a new piece/opportunity/change that you're excited about?
JF: Super excited to start sponsoring birthday parties at the orphanage I support with the proceeds from the business. Each birthday we sponsor provides cake and ice cream for 50 kids and we're hoping to do one birthday a month for all the kids' birthdays in that month.
NYHC: Share an important lesson you've learned from running your business.
JF: Don't stop! It's so easy to get discouraged running a small business but no matter what keep pushing forward and learn to get creative with problem solving. Above all, have fun and enjoy what you're doing!
