Meet the Member: Arza Gilad
by Jennifer Velasquez
Welcome new team member Arza Gilad! In 2002, Azra started Arzadesign LLC based on her love for art and accessories. She specializes in creating unique handbags, combining chic and usability. Arza shares her perspective on the changes so many businesses are going through as a result of the pandemic along with lessons she’s learned from being a founder.
NYHC: Tell us about what you make.
Arza Gilad: I make leather handbags in NYC. All my designs are patented. I use cow hide suede and lamb skin.
NYHC: Where do you live?
AG: For the past 20 years I’ve lived in Brooklyn.
NYHC: What is unique or different about your process and/or designs?
AG: My designs follow the concept less is more. I’m trying to keep shapes minimal but still functional.
NYHC: Do you have any favorite pieces? What makes them special to you?
AG: I like my signature piece, the Diamond bag, which has been with me since 2002. I like the simplicity, the shape, the sharp lines and it’s easy to wear. It’s a timeless design.
NYHC: What is your favorite tool or supply?
AG: I like the smell of leather whenever we open a new bundle! It’s very exciting to get a new color or new texture. Each leather is a bit different from the other.
NYHC: Is there a new piece/opportunity/change that you're excited about?
AG: I am working on a new project. But it’s too early to tell!
NYHC: What advice or tips can you share with other makers?
AG: It’s hard times for all of us now, but sometimes you need this VOID in order to clear space for new things. Most of us are going through a process that we have never experienced before. But it’s a good lesson, not an easy one, but a good time for a change.
NYHC: Share an important lesson you've learned from running your business.
AG: One, it’s hard to be a woman in this business. Two, stand for what you think is right, you are probably right. Three, follow your intuition.
